Halloween!!!

For Halloween, Taylor went as a cow. She was quite a scary cow... to her Mom and me. La Palma has a town costume contest / party at the Central Park, just like Bayview Village used to when we were little. However, Taylor did not like it too much, so she collected a few candy bars and we left before the actual contest began. No doubt, she would have enjoyed it more if she had an older brother who would have gone with her, and held her hand when she got scared.

Actually, I wasn't in any shape to insist that she stick it out through the contest: I had run in a half-marathon (13.1 miles) that morning, and had blown out my right knee with about 4 miles left to go (a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) is the technical diagnosis). After having to walk back the reminder of the distance (adding insult to injury, literally) my knee was pretty swollen and painful. So that evening I was limping along, having to carry her most of the time ("Hold me, hold me" is her command to be carried), and in a fair bit of pain. At this point, I've pretty much given up on the San Diego Marathon in January 1999, and am hoping to have recovered in time for the LA Marathon in March. Trick or treat, indeed.

Anyway, we went home and Taylor did a little trick-or-treating around here, and then helped me pass out candies to the kids that came to our door. She was actually quite brave and very conscientious about handing out the same number of candy bars to each person. A couple times, the costumes would scare her, and she would have to stay in the back with her Mom until they left. The funny thing was they were usually little kids in fairly innocuous costumes, like one little clown who had a bright red wig. We were still very impressed at how brave she was for the most part.

Funny story: La Palma used to be all dairy land, so when we were at the town costume party, one of the long-time residents came up to me and told me that they liked it when the kids dressed up as cows and other farm animals because "it keeps our town heritage alive." I didn't have the heart to tell the kind lady that if that had been my intention, she would have been dressed as either Mary Queen of the Scots, Sophia Loren or Tandang Sora - so I just thanked her and left it at that.

Here are pictures of our (almost) award-winning cow-girl:

La vache qui rite...

"Taylor, what does a cow say?"

"Moooo..."
